“Plateau” is a swear word when it comes to weight loss. In general, we hate, dread, and fear them. Let’s debunk these pesky beasts and lessen their power ☺

1) The majority of time when we say we have “plateaued” we haven’t. A true potential plateau is no weight loss or body composition shifts for 4-6 weeks. If you haven’t dropped pounds on the scale for 1-2 weeks, you haven’t plateaued! This is simply your body getting used to all the change it has undergone. Hormones are rebalancing, fluid is shifting. Likely, you’ll see a shift in body composition in the right direction even if total pounds haven’t dropped. Give yourself a hug, stop beating yourself up, let go of the fear of a plateau and shift yourself into a mindset of faith, confidence and belief that your body is shedding this fat-weight and will continue to do so consistently and with ease.

2) If you have witnessed absolutely no drop in fat-weight and no positive body composition changes in over 4-6 weeks, then you could be in the midst of a plateau. Let’s look at three things: Most plateaus are mental and emotional. You’ve got to take a deep look at what a lower weight means to you. Can you visualize it? See it like it’s a reality? Do you have any fear associated with your body entering into a new state? If you’re in a fear mindset, then your body isn’t going to move through until you’ve shifted your story.

2) Are you following a healthy nutritional plan that provides adequate protein and healthy fats while not severely restrict
your calories? Are you following your plan precisely? Is stress being managed and sleep prioritized?

If you’ve worked through these points above, then for some people a short intermittent fast (think skipping breakfast) can help to jump start things.
