It's being called "gas station heroin," a chemical derivative of a natural substance called kratom that has a high risk of addiction.

Now, officials in at least two Metro Detroit communities are considering regulating both kratom and its more dangerous derivative, 7-hydroxymytragynine, both of which can have opioid-like effects.

Officials in Warren and Clinton Township said they're concerned about people younger than 21 having easy access to the substances at gas stations and smoke shops, and they want better labeling and education about the risks they pose.
