The Chicano Murals Movement was started in the 1960s as a way for artists to illustrate cultural motifs throughout the Southwest. Well known muralists painted powerful paintings that increased cultural awareness and helped people identify with the Chicano Movement. Leo Tanguma, nationally recognized as one of the main Chicano Muralists, developed the concept of structural murals since many of the walls had been defaced or painted over. The structural mural combines mural art and sculpture creating an interconnected piece of art.

Leo Tanguma will be teaching our course, CHS 3025, Contemporary Chicana/o Art, this summer on Mondays-Thursdays from 12:30-2:30pm. The class begins May 31st-July 2nd. Leo will work with students in designing, creating and installing a structural mural for our department, located in the Rectory Building.
