From our archives: American healthcare is too expensive, too many people can’t get the care they need, we’re sicker than we should be, and the whole experience seems to just keep getting worse.

“Are these unrelated symptoms? Or are they common manifestations of the same underlying process?”

That’s the question asked by the authors of ‘Medicare for All: A Citizen’s Guide.’ The 2021 book highlights Medicare for All, the proposal to create a universal single-payer healthcare system in the U.S. that was the centerpiece of Sen. Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaigns.

The book was written by Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, who served as Detroit’s health director and ran for governor in 2018, and Micah Johnson, a resident physician in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In it, the authors make the case that America’s unique healthcare problems stem from the simple fact that unlike many other democracies around the world, the U.S. treats healthcare as a consumer product and not a human right.
