Do you know anyone with a rare disease? Well, you know at least one 🙋🏾‍♀️My rare disease is Chronic ITP and I was diagnosed September 2021. Since today is Rare Disease Day, I am bringing awareness to ITP.

ITP is an autoimmune bleeding disorder characterized by abnormally low levels of platelets. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks platelets as “bad guys” and destroys them.

3 out of 100,000 are diagnosed with ITP in the US annually.

About 40% of all patients diagnosed with ITP are children under 10.

Since my diagnosis, I’ve been hospitalized numerous times and have undergone several different treatments and medications. Some have “worked” - and I put quotes around worked because while platelet count has risen, the side effects have either put me in the hospital or have drastically affected my body and mind (hello 100mg of steroids last summer).

I counted and I’ve had 31 doctor appointments over the past year.

I’m sharing this to 1, continue to bring awareness to ITP but 2, to remind you all that we never know what someone else is going through. Not all diseases are visible (although ITP is when your platelets are critically low) — and the people you look up to, support, learn from and work with are people at the end of the day. Lead with compassion, ask questions, and a simple “I see you” works wonders.

There are over 7,000 rare diseases that impact over 300 million people globally.

Even those with the “same” rare disease have different symptoms and different therapies work for them

SHOUTOUT TO EVERYONE WITH A RARE DISEASE! I see you. And shoutout to those that support others with rare diseases. You are so appreciated.
