I’m doing Dry January for the first time. I’m actually someone that scoffs at Dry January, but I felt like now was the right time for me.

Why? Because I couldn’t remember when I didn’t have a drink for an extended period of time. Alcohol has been a big part of my life since I went to college, which was two days after my 18th birthday. New found freedom and parties go hand in hand with drinking socially.

While my taste and consumption level have matured over the years, I really started thinking about just how much alcohol has been part of my life.

I learned alcohol was a part of the culture in advertising at my first agency job in 2011, and every agency following. It was always around, either in the office or at a happy hour. One of my offices had a fully stocked bar in it. It was acceptable to have wine on your desk come 3pm. The accounts I worked on were also wine brands.

And being a creator in the wine lifestyle space now, it is now a part of my work.

The reasons I think I felt called to doing Dry January was to see what would happen to my body.

I’m looking forward to seeing how not having alcohol regularly affects me cognitively and physically. I’m still dealing with inflammation months after being off of medication and beyond some other lifestyle tweaks, I’m wondering how much having alcohol in my system affects it. While my care team says I have no restrictions when it comes to my diet and lifestyle, I’m restricting myself! 💪🏾

The first week, I found myself walking to grab a bottle of wine in the house and saying, “Oh, I’m doing Dry January!” It’s a trip at what your body and mind get used to doing, purely out of habit. I’m determined to replace the habit with something else over the next few days. 🙏🏾

Will I keep this up after January? I’m not sure yet. But, for now, I’m proud of myself for recognizing that I needed to look at this so I can see what my sober body does at 35 years old!

Anyone else participating in Dry January?

Do you abstain from alcohol year round?

I’d love to hear from you if you’re comfortable sharing!
