Today marks two years since the tragic killing of Botham Jean, who lived and died in House District 100. Botham was a young man full of life and faith, he was a son, a brother, a friend, and a person with dreams. His life had value. He meant something. He still matters.

My colleague, Rep. carl_sherman_tx, is filing legislation to clarify the castle doctrine, which was the killer’s main defense. Even though we saw an arrest, charges, and a conviction — we know it was too little and too late. I’ve seen defendants who’ve done far less get sentenced to much more time. We can not simply respond to injustice after the fact, we have to be proactive and reform the policing and justice systems that allow for these tragedies to take place.

Until we create a society where a Botham Jean and a Jordan Edwards can grow old and realize their dreams, a society where George Floyd can breath, where Trayvon can walk, Ahmaud can jog, and Black Lives can live freely without fear — our work isn’t over.

Today, we mourn a life cut short, but tomorrow, and everyday hereafter, we work nonstop and unapologetically towards fulfilling the promises of America.
