There is a lot of confusion around the term “SMAS facelift,” especially when you hear phrases like SMAS plication. These are related, but they are not the same thing.

The SMAS is the structural support layer beneath the skin that surgeons address during most modern facelifts. SMAS plication is one technique used to tighten that layer by folding and suturing it to create lift along the jawline and lower face.

Because this technique focuses on tightening rather than releasing deeper facial ligaments, the movement of the tissues is typically more limited to the sides of the face. This is why different facelift techniques can produce very different results, even though they may sound similar.

Understanding facelift terminology can make researching facial rejuvenation much easier and help you ask the right questions during a consultation.

Why patients choose Dr. Novis for their facelift and neck lift:
No general anesthesia. Oral sedation with local anesthesia
Full deep plane technique for natural, long lasting results
No drain tubes
Reduced bruising and smoother recovery
Double board-certified facial plastic surgeon specializing exclusively in the face and neck
