⭐️ My Favorite Photo / Moment of 2021. ⭐️
.
2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Olympic Stadium. Allyson Felix, one of the greatest olympians in history, waits in the tunnel, underneath the Olympic stadium, moments before her 400 meters semi final heat.
.
For me, this was the moment. Track history. Suspense, electricity, hope, uncertainty, gratitude, nervousness, excitement, all of this and knowing that this could have been the end of an era. We know that this was Allyson’s final Olympic Games, and we knew it would be tough for her to medal in the 400m.
Allyson was coming back from having a baby and pushing hard on the track to get back up to speed. This was the Olympic semi finals of the womens 400 meters, and we know that it would have to take probably a 49 second time to get one of the two automatics spots into the final. This was not a given as Allyson hadn’t run a 49 for a while.
Just rethinking this moment, I can relive how my adrenaline was pumping. I had been thinking of how I would love to capture this moment for a while, for weeks before the Olympics. I knew that it was probably not possible. Especially with Covid protocols. So a few days before this race, I tried to get into the tunnel to where I could photograph some athletes before they entered the stadium and I got spotted and kicked out. Then I tried the next day and somehow I didn’t get removed. The next day was Allyson’s 400 semi final. I knew I couldn’t get there too early or I might get asked to leave. So with about 5 mins to spare , I jogged, walked quickly with my cumbersome camera gear, through the passageways underneath the stadium to where the 400 meter athletes were about to come out. The only people that were there were some tv and medical people. I saw the doorway where the athletes come out and I positioned myself , crouched down, next to a concrete column, trying to be out of sight. The runners came out and I descretely began to snap away. It didn’t last that long, but it’s moments like this that last a lifetime. Being a track fan my whole life, having a relationship with the sport, and knowing Allyson, this was priceless. What a gift.
Felix 49.89, 2nd, final bound.
