Food travels through immigration, migration or indenture. Our foods tell our ancestors' stories—of the lands we left behind, of the lands we now call our own. How we adopt/adapt informs us on how we live and love. What we talk about when we talk about food is stories of where we call home. We were ALL immigrants once, this is our story. As the daughter of refugees (from what's now Bangladesh when India was divided during the 1947 partition of British-ruled India), and an immigrant to America as a graduate student, award-winning author, social justice activist and scientist, Madhushree Ghosh talks about how San Diego, America's Finest City, celebrates immigrants and refugees. In particular, she talks about the amazing gardeners of City Heights' New Roots Community Farm--an organic, sustainable farm run by immigrants and refugees from all over the world. 
How we live, how we love, how we share food tells us what is important to us. In a fast moving world, Madhushree rallies for us to have a conversation with our farmers, talk about our immigrant roots, and honor our stories that we tell through the foods of our ancestors.  The daughter of refugees and an immigrant, Madhushree Ghosh’s award-winning debut food narrative memoir, KHABAAR: An Immigrant Journey of Food, Memory, and Family, was a Ms Magazine ‘Most Anticipated Read in 2022’, and won an Independent Publisher Book Awards’ 2023 Gold Medal for Memoir/Autobiography. Her work is forthcoming in Best American Essays in Food Writing (2023), Pushcart-nominated, and published in The New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Longreads, BOMB, Poets & Writers, LARB, High Country News and others. Working in oncology diagnostics, Madhushree is focused on gender pay parity in science, especially for women of color, and food stories of immigrants. Madhushree is a sought-after speaker on food and social justice issues, food-narrative braided memoir workshops and pop-up dinners-and-conversations, as well as on women of color in biotech and scientific leadership panels.
