DYK that one of the nine US players with prior World Cup experience received her higher education in Virginia? Emily Sonnett returned to the turf of the world stage this month, ready to play as a defender. That’s why we chose to feature her as this week’s #ThisIsVirginia highlight.

Although she’s originally from Georgia, Sonnett attended school in Charlottesville starting in 2012, where she studied at the University of Virginia (UVA). In 2015, her senior year, she was named ESPNW National Player of the Year and a first-team All-American.

On “Meet the 23,” an online video series featuring the ladies competing on the US Women’s National Soccer Team, Sonnett said that the best piece of advice she ever received came from her trainer.

“He always says, ‘You know, it’s not a mistake, it’s an opportunity for growth. It’s an opportunity,’” Sonnett said. “And I’m like, you know, ‘You’re so right. It is an opportunity.’ So I guess it’s just like, the advice would be changing your thinking about a mistake.”

Viewers will have an opportunity to see Sonnett in upcoming games. The FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 began on July 20 and runs through August 20.
