3 days ago, in the first practice after podium training, I injured my left ankle on a rings dismount. Even though I did not suffer a bad injury, I was barely able to walk, let alone jump or land. I felt like I just threw away the opportunity to start at the FISU World University Games and compete for Germany for the first time in my life after 20 years of gymnastics. Needless to say, I was devastated and lost all my excitement of being in China at this massive and amazing event. What happened then was 2 days full of physio, rehab, icing, stem, laser and hoping that I would somehow be able to at least compete rings with an easier dismount, sacrificing my two other events, floor and vault.

Yesterday, the day of the competition, against all my beliefs, I was able to compete all three of those events and I couldn’t be happier about it. Especially floor was not the performance I was hoping for. But the feeling of almost missing out on everything and then still somehow being able to push through and represent my country next to some of the best gymnasts in the world is something I’m eternally grateful for. I’m beyond thankful for the physiotherapists, the doctor, our coach, my teammates, my family and girlfriend for all their support the past couple days. Without them I would not have been able to make these lifelong memories. Chengdu, you are unreal!!
