“When did you fall in love with hip-hop?” This is the question we asked local hip hop artists and hip hop influencers as we countdown to the birthday of hip hop, which is on August 11. Here is what Dr. Faith Wilkerson had to say: “I think for me, I fell in love with hip hop in the late nineties. I was born and raised in New York and I fell in love with hip hop at birth because that was just the environment that I grew up in. You have Run D.M.C., Eric B., and then you get into Salt-N-Pepa and you just you kind of grew up hearing that kind of music.  I call it the orange tape but it’s Master P’s Ghetto D. S for me, it was the pivotal moment that I really, truly found love of hip hop because it became something special to me as Faith the person verses the other music that was coming out around that time. So the Bad Boy era and even things that were coming out of like Florida and different things, I felt like it was my parents' music, right? My mom's going to listen to Jay-Z, my mom's going to listen to, you know, pretty much anything Diddy's on. But she's not listening to this orange tape, though. It was one of the very first ones that I actually bought myself for my own real money. For me, Ghetto D was like a getaway album. So all of this like down South Texas sound that I just didn't even know was an option because again, in New York, we can be in a very big bubble. It's a big bubble, but we end up being in a bubble. So like this album allowed me to really, truly begin to explore other genres of hip hop that otherwise I would not, because West Coast music never really resonated with me. I know we had the purple tape first. Thank you, Raekwon, But the orange tape is my unsung hero of our film.”
