In this episode of "DEI in 5," join me as I share a recent unexpected experience I had using Canva's AI-powered text-to-image feature. I recently prompted Canva's text-to-image AI to generate an image of a Black woman with bantu knots, and was met with a shocking response - the AI claimed this could lead to inappropriate images! To make matters worse, when I went to the element search to look for existing images, using the same search, I was shown several images of nooses, which is deeply concerning.

In this video, we're going to delve into this flub, examine what might be behind it, and discuss the wider implications of unintentional bias in AI technology. This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of diversifying AI product teams to ensure that the technology we use is both respectful and representative.

As a Black woman working in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and as a person who has been helping bridge cultural divides since childhood, I have a really unique perspective to offer and a lot of knowledge to share. My hope is that this channel helps inspire others to achieve their goals, think outside of the box, and just... thrive, as you see fit!
