Test 2: Sweating like a Pig
Heading out for the Pig Chipper event I knew it was going to be hot, but boy were we in for it.
We were waiting in the tunnel when the medical team wheeled @coachnmathew and @colten_mertens past us with severe cramps. It did not spark joy. The looks the rest of the gang were wearing didn’t help either. Here goes nothing. Prep the ice baths.
It was a simple event. You needed to save it for the back half. The women were slipping a lot on the pig so I brought a towel out keep from turning into a soupy mess on the pig and wall balls.
Controlled on the way down, I broke up the gymnastics lots but they were still the hardest 100 wall balls I’ve ever done. I tucked my towel in my shorts to stage by the ball but forgot all about it until I was doing pull ups and it was hitting me in the back of the head. It shook loose and I accidentally kicked it over to the wall ball station while I was on the bar. Perfect execution.
Things were going to plan until about 80 wall balls in when My right calf started to give me a little “hey how are y’a”. I finished with two sets of 10 to try and calm the cramp down, but every time I came off the rig after that I’d get a nice jolt. Things were getting worse faster than they were getting better. The only true freedom was at the finish line.
When I did the first flip i knew I had to be careful. I was teetering on a runaway cramp that could send me to the ground. Every time I’d pick the pig and bring it to hips my leg locked up hard and I had to use all arms to finish the flip, followed by too long of a rest before my leg was ready for another go. It was frustrating, like having a speed governor on. 10 flips took too long and I finished up in 6th, but I didn’t need to be carried off so I’ll take the win. The key to a good comeback is continuous forward progress. The important part is I escaped both outdoor events on Thursday with no heat injury and we weren’t using our legs in the coliseum event 😂.
The community in the ice baths was bumping after.
The Main goal of the day after I blow a first event is just to finish in the top 10 and start Friday in the top heat. We’re on our way.
