An accident almost took her life and ended her military career, but Maj. Christy Wise, 2009 grad, battled back to be the sixth leg amputee to return to active duty flying.

Now we are lucky enough to have her return to USAFA as an Air Officer Commanding cohort – set to become a fully-fledged AOC next year.

The Reno native said her love of alpine skiing is what originally attracted her to the Academy – plus a desire to have something more than a “normal college experience.” She said what the Academy taught her about the Warrior Ethos is to be humble enough to ask for help and the importance of teamwork.

“Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but together we are strong,” she said.

Wise loves being part of the Air Force rescue mission. Her favorite mission?

“Last Fall, I flew six hours off the Pacific Coast in the middle of the ocean at night to airdrop medical supplies and blood to PJs who were taking care of two Mexican fishermen who had been injured from a crane that fell on them,” she said. “Our day flight had airdropped the PJs onto the boat, and my flight was tasked to resupply them because they were going through their medical supplies too quickly. It was completely dark and some bad weather, so we really had to work together as a crew to make sure the supplies got to the PJs.”
