Test 4: Alpaca My Bags
Woke up today thinking it was a good day for ol’ Vellner. I felt confident and was ready to make some moves. So full of hope. So naive.
Last year we did Alpaca on a wet field and the sleds moved a lot easier. I remember having one in the dry warm up area that barely moved. heat 1 confirmed it. It was a slow and steady workout that was won or lost on the rope. Historically, good for me!
I was feeling strong and in control heading into round 3. Did my first climb and took a nice break. My pull was tired but grip felt ok. Confident in my climbing i started the last ascent.
When I started my descent I slipped one hand coming down. By the time I regripped it was too late. I had too much momentum going down. My hand slid a good 3 feet down the rope. We have to descend hand over hand, so In a panic I tried to kind of fake it, but I was in free fall. I hit the mat and looked at my hands. No rep. No skin.
Big whoops. I Failed the hardest rep of the workout, and while I was at it got Severe burns on all 4 fingers. This would have significant implications for the rest of the week but I’d deal with that later. I took a vacation before rubbing a chalk in my open wounds and trying again. My hand was wet with blood and I slipped again at the top. the walls were closing in.
It’s excruciating to sit on the field and wait like that. You want to hide. It’s nothing short of embarrassing. I know it’s hard to watch, but you should try being there.
I kept my composure enough to get the last climb. At the top i saw they had a drone over my rope to capture the tragedy.
Frustrating is an understatement. I should have been skipping to a top 5 finish, and instead found myself in 27th with mutilated fingers. These things can make or break a weekend. At least I knew the finish was not reflective of my fitness. It was an error and I’d fix it, but it was a tough morning to be a Vellner fan.
This finish haunted me most of the weekend. It was meant to be my turning point, but the rally had to wait. My hands were bad, but at least if i ever turn to a life of crime I’ll have no fingerprints. Silver lining.
I turned up the difficulty on the weekend, but I’m not dead yet
