Test 7: Road Kill
It wasn’t 5km, we know.
This was probably the workout I was dreading most. A painful distance and They announced it early enough for me to run it in my head about 100 times before we did it for real. I don’t think the daily floggings helped 😂.
The night before my wife informed me that I was to run with the lead breakaway pack no matter what. After taking a conservative approach on The Ride and not being able to catch up we needed aggression. “Run with them for two laps then figure it out”. I didn’t like the sound of it, but @mich_letendre agreed. This wasn’t gonna feel good.
It was a mass start of men and women, 4 lines of 15 on a narrow road. I was standing sideways with my chest touching @bk_gudmundsson back and my back touching @jellehoste chest. Feet tangled, I had no idea how we’d get running. Everyone leaned forward and on the beep I got thrown forward. A push on my back almost sent me to my face to be trampled to death. I barely caught my footing and it launched me forward clear of the pack and into the lead group. Sweet! I think it was @spraguerrrr . Boo that man.
The First lap i held strong, but we ran about a 3:30/km pace which made me nervous. Second lap i started to hurt and @adlerjeff was still talking in full sentences, goading everyone 😳. I fell off the lead pack at the end of lap 2. With nothing to think about i counted my strides. About 550 per lap. Final lap I was counting down but things were getting dark. Legs and back cramping bad I got passed by a group about 500m from the finish. About where a couple fans in inflatable cow outfits were cheering. Hilarious l in lap 1, but now I wanted to tackle them 😂. I held it together but it was ugly. Collapsing at the finish athlete control politely informed me that I needed to move out of the way for finishers, to which I replied “you will have to remove me” 🥴.
It was an overcorrection from The Ride, but I hung onto 10th. I can live with it. After a long ice bath I tried to get my life together and was cramping like crazy getting my shoes back on. I was thankful this one was finally over with, but questioning my ability to recover before the next one. Moving day has started.
