Test 12: Echoing in My Nightmares
When there are unannounced workouts as the weekend comes to a close we’re all keeping track of what’s still on the table, especially for the final. On Saturday night before bed my wife asked me what I was thinking about. I said, “I’m building an echo bike/thruster workout in my head and giving myself anxiety”. Nothing like manifesting your destiny…
It was a bit weird going into the final this year. Mathematically 1st was out of reach, but with everything that happened I was almost guaranteed second place overall. Barring catastrophe, which with me is never off the table. One cool thing is that we had a chance at an all Canadian podium which would be epic. PB&J baby! Jeff had to do nothing, I had to do very little, @fikowski was gonna have to send it 🚀
As the women took the floor I ran into Mat and asked him what he would do on this workout. He gave some very unhelpful advice about going really hard on the bike and thrusters all unbroken. Thanks dude, forgot thrusters were a recovery movement for you.
Back in reality we figured the bike was a steady effort and you needed to make the thrusters hard, but save something for the lunge. My legs were feeling damaged and with low risk we decided to break the thrusters and avoid crash and burn potential.
In the corral I reminded the gang this was the last workout in the coliseum. Ever. It’s grandpa’s job to remind the kids these are the good old days. Let’s go!
On the floor it felt funny. I didn’t get as much adrenaline as normal or get too uncomfortable. I just sort of sailed to the finish. As I was lunging I was aware that Brent started failing his lunges and i caught a few people with a less agressive pace to finish the weekend.
On the finish line I gave @adlerjeff a big hug and @roman_khrennikov a bigger one. We didn’t pull off the Canadian podium, but what a finish. Roman has the best story in CrossFit coming into next season. Look out. Before the floor was swept away and interviews and podium ceremonies began I took a minute to hug my wife and think about our time here.
Comeback compete. 6 years, 4 podiums. Madison has been good to us. On to the next one.
