roxybike_coaching 😨 Do you fear steep, chunky or steppy sections, especially if they are directly followed by a tight turn?!

❓Relatable!
🙀 Many riders fear them and I’ve seen MANY riders fail at them! 🤕

🤔 Why so?

💡Because many riders think you need to RELEASE the brakes on roll-downs or chunk.

❌ If, however, roll-downs are accompanied by steepness, releasing the brakes means: you will gain A LOT of speed.

👉 Releasing the brakes DOES work, if there is enough space afterwards to ride it out, or if the trail flattens out.

✋ BUT, if there is a tight corner right afterwards (or if the trail continues steeply), you MUST modulate BOTH brakes TROUGHOUT!

🪶 Modulated braking means: you must FEATHER the brakes to maintain braking control - to maintain your braking power JUST before the threshold, to avoid skidding wheels and ensure gently rolling wheels for traction.
✅ YES you can also brake during corners - if you’re mindfully MODULATING your brakes vs. PULSING them!
✅ Also, you must have practiced modulated braking often enough in a safe environment to develop the FINE COORDINATION and ANTICIPATION to constantly adjust your braking power.

❗️Braking sounds “basic”, but actually requires a lot of dedicated practice.
👩‍🏫 My full-time coaching career, working with riders of ALL levels shows me: braking skills is what keeps MANY riders from progressing from intermediate to advanced.

💯 If you want to unlock gnar, tech, steeps and more: PRACTICE your FUNdamentals and especially braking.
🩵 And if you want to accelerate your learning by following my proven drills, send me a message or comment FUNdamentals below 💪💪💪

P.S. Why keep the pedals evenly weighted? Especially for tight corners at slow to medium speed, keeping your pedals evenly weighted allows you to finely adjust your body position - which allows finer traction control.
Or, shortly put, how do you think you’ve got more equilibrium: when standing on one foot or two feet?! 🦩
