This remarkable achievement reinforces India’s position in the global space race by making it one of a select handful of nations to ever reach the moon, joining the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China. Wednesday’s event also highlights the ongoing efforts by many countries to explore and use the moon’s resources.

‘India’s successful moon mission is not just India’s alone,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a video, translated by CNN. ‘This is a year in which the world is witnessing India’s G20 presidency. Our approach of one Earth, one family, one future is resonating across the globe.’

What sets India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission apart is its landing site, which is closer to the moon’s south pole than any previous mission has ventured. This region is of paramount scientific and strategic interest, as it is believed to contain valuable water ice deposits.
