## Caption

First, there were the murder hornets. Then, there was the spotted lanternfly. Now, a new creepy crawly in town: The hammerhead worm, which can grow over a foot in length.

Recently spotted in Virginia, the flatworm produces a neurotoxin to hunt earthworms and other prey. This toxin can cause skin irritation in humans. For pets, licking or consuming a hammerhead worm could result in sickness and a veterinary visit.

If you encounter a hammerhead worm, experts encourage removing the pest from your property using gloves. Otherwise, wash your hands thoroughly with soapy water—especially before touching your mouth or eyes. While you can squish a hammerhead worm, please do not cut it; it can regenerate using sections of its body.
