June 14, 1986 - June 1, 2008, the King Kong experience at Universal Studios Hollywood marked a transformative era in theme park innovation. The colossal 7-ton, 30-foot-tall animatronic King Kong was an engineering marvel, holding the distinction as the largest and most intricate figure of its kind for many years. This groundbreaking attraction redefined the limits of sophistication, setting the stage for the intricate themed entertainment we enjoy today.

A running time of 2:30, the show unfolded with the awe-inspiring sight of a sliding bridge, ingeniously designed by Bill Watkins. This remarkable bridge, equipped with teflon plates, smoothly transported the 88,000-pound tram back and forth while Kong seemingly rocked it. Kong’s interaction with the bridge gave the illusion of movement, even though the bridge itself did the rocking.

The stage where this spectacle took place measured an impressive 26,000 square feet, featuring dimensions of 160 feet by 160 feet. The endeavor was no small feat, coming with a price tag of $6.5 million in 1986. The audio experience was enhanced by Technomad loudspeakers, enveloping visitors in a truly immersive environment.

A talented team was responsible for bringing this attraction to life: Art Director Peter Alexander, Project Manager Larry Lester, and the skilled engineers behind the Kong figure, including Chief Engineer Bob Gurr, Tom Reidenbach, and Dave Schwenniger. The animation of Kong was a collaborative effort by Peter Alexander and Craig Barr, while the Helicopter Crash rig was executed by Bob Gurr and Sequoia Creative. The overall soundstage design was the brainchild of Henry Bumstead.
