Ken Maxwell of Irwin adjusts the balaclava on his 15-year-old son, Raine Maxwell, as they hunt in 12-degree weather on Wednesday in Penn Township, Westmoreland County. Raine, who is on winter break from school in the Norwin School District, shot his first deer on opening day this year, one minute apart from his dad’s first of the season. The pair tries to hunt as often as possible. “Some of my best times with my dad [Jim] before he died were hunting together,” Mr. Maxwell said as he talked about passing the tradition on to Raine.
