About 8-12 days after a monarch forms a chrysalis it will become transparent, revealing the delicate butterfly inside.

Monarch butterflies are legendary for their vibrant colors and epic migration — a journey of more than 2,000 miles from Mexico to Canada, undertaken by animals weighing less than a single gram.

Sadly, these iconic insects are in trouble. Western monarchs — who spend winters in California — have suffered a heartbreaking 90% decline. The Center is urgently fighting to protect them. Learn more about our work to protect monarch butterflies.
