For #HispanicHeritageMonth, we've asked students to write an open letter detailing their heritage, their loved ones they share it with, and the lands they come from. Take the time to learn these stories as we share them over the next few weeks ❤️

Meet Sergio Coreas, a @rutgersbschool student majoring in finance.

"Painted skin and walls. The artist paints in descriptions. The artist is smart, the artist is dumb, the artist hurts. All ask him to stop painting, instead he multiplies. In 13 seconds, a child becomes an artist, and he will paint in a description that scares many from coming to his home. His home is beautiful without paint, it’s a tropic with waterfalls, beaches, and a beaming sun that bursts trees.

The artist's father walks with a machete through the ranch. His mother plasters corn flowers for the family to eat. His brothers ride along his uncle’s 4×4 cabin. His sister trips in the city to try tropical treats. Shaved ice with fruity flavors is what the artist grew up on until he became defenseless for 13 seconds. 13 seconds later he painted on 13 families. The families will celebrate their beloved relatives. The families want the paint to dry up.

The families are tired of running. They want to see their soil in the seasons. The families want their home in natural presents. So, they protest, they scream at the artist in disguise. People chant. People see the artist's filth and carve stained paint off the skin and walls of the country. Authority has arrived. Authority feels tired, and authority takes authority. Authority accepts all sacrifices needed. Now neighbors unlock their doors. Neighbors now stand alongside authority. They listen to the voice and have begun to stop laughing at the circus that the artist created. Authority creates a future.

He introduces his people to outside experiences. Authority stimulated his home and has created advantages for his people. The man in authority screams his pride, love, and tears viva El Salvador."
