In honor of #NationalComingOutDay, we want to celebrate and support those who have come out as LGBTQ+. Recognizing that coming out is powerful tool, we also recognize everyone who may not have the privilege to come out. Furthermore, we have had conversations with some members of our greater Rutgers community reflecting on their experiences through open letters 🌟

Meet Kiran, a ruhonorscollnb & rutgerssebs student majoring in Environmental and Business Economics.

"Hey 15-year-old Kiran,

Remember how you felt betrayed when you went through puberty, in a “Whoa, I did NOT sign up for this! How do I unsubscribe?” way? Well, turns out you were right. Being transgender, bisexual, and closeted about both of those things in high school in India is not going to be the easiest thing, but you’ll make it out and move to New Jersey for college. Things will, in fact, get better. You are now 20, and you are living life as an openly bisexual trans guy. Thank you, by the way, for trying your best to seek out resources and supportive friends when times were tough. They were instrumental in getting through high school and eventually coming out to your mom (who needed time to educate herself and understand your identities but eventually ended up being very supportive). She just sent you 2 (very cool) men’s shirts from India as a present for your 20th birthday - the same person who you had to argue with in 11th grade just to get your hair cut short.
Also, you now run a student organization for APIDA LGBTQ+ folks! Who would’ve thought?

Last but not least, you are *finally* set to start testosterone later this month! Can you believe it? It took a couple years of therapy, working hard to get into college here, and doing things that I love to get to where you are today.
I’ll admit, some things are still hard. That lingering feeling of this house is not a home that comes with being transgender, the imposter syndrome, and the occasional inability to get out of bed are still here, but we’re working on it. Coming out is a journey, not an event.
Hang tight, the next few years are going to be very, very interesting. Mostly in a good way.
Good luck,

20-year-old Kiran"

❤️
