Meet Opal Lee, the ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth’. 

In 2016 at the incredible age of 89, Opal Lee embarked on a historic 1,400 mile walk from Fort Worth TX to Washington, D.C. Her goal? Advocating for the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday. That kicked off a national campaign that took many years, but in 2021 Juneteenth was finally designated as a federal holiday in large part due to Opal. 

And now, at almost a century old, every year she still does a 2.5 mile walk on Juneteenth symbolizing the 2.5 years it took for the slaves of Texas to be told about their emancipation. Opal shows us, warriors of any age can fight and win the battles that matter to them with passion, focus and an unstoppable grit.
