Here’s the story of how my favorite shot in this whole film, almost didn’t happen:

On my senior thesis project, Director conrapendragon and I really wanted a reaction shot of our lead character’s face, as her husband is trying to drown her.

We were trying to think of several different techniques on how we’d go about it during pre production, but ultimately scrapped the shot.

It wasn’t until our Production Designer Marko overheard us talking about it on set one day and said “Give me 15 minutes”

This dude grabbed a plastic container and cut a window hole in it that he then glued some plexiglass over.

He then took two doors off a cabinet that was on location and put them up on two chairs with a gap in the middle.

Just enough for us to place the camera underneath using oconnorsupport baby sticks and have a gap for the lens to go through.

To say it was a shittyrigs would be an understatement 😂

We put our Arri Alexa Mini with a CookeOptics S4/i 14mm lens, underneath this contraption, and made sure to cover it with some trash bags, leaving only the front element exposed.

He then poured water in the container and said “You have 20 minutes before water starts leaking all over your $100,000 camera” 💀

So we all quickly got into position to get the shot.

I even decided to pull focus myself for this one as a way to give me some control over what’s happening, since I was as nervous as you could be, hoping this container won’t leak!

The shot turned out even better than I had imagined as you can see from the final 😁

We lit the set using two aputure.europe 1200d lights that were gelled with rosco_labs 117 Steel Blue and were shooting through the windows inside.

We then also had a bunch of asteraofficial NYX bulbs that were on the ceiling around the whole set, in a chase sequence at 2700K.

And the results speak for themself!

The moral of the story is - With an incredible and passionate crew that’s focused on solving problems, literally anything is possible! :)
