A strategic mindset ranks as one of the most in-demand skills for project leaders. So how can you develop it? “Curiosity tops the list,” says Emmanuel Tackie, PMP, PgMP. But he admits there’s “an element of grit” required, too. 

As VP of strategy and acceleration at BioScript Solutions, Tackie is focused on expanding the Canadian healthcare company’s digital capabilities and making it easier for patients to access specialty care. 

To bake that strategy into day-to-day decision making, he’s tried to build a culture of transparency across the enterprise. “It’s almost as if we’re sending out this signal that says, ‘Can you help me with this? What do you see that I should be prepared for?’” Tackie says.

For his team, delivering on strategy comes down to defining the most important things—and identifying the most important thing to do next. 

“We just break that down, over and over,” he says. “It’s like a pyramid—where we’re trying to go, what it looks like from the benefits perspective, what it looks like from a deliverables perspective, and how we resource to actually make that a reality.”
