DYK, the shortest-serving US president, was from Virginia?

President William Henry Harrison, inaugurated on March 4, 1841, only served for 31 days. Harrison traveled to Washington, DC, via train on the day of his inauguration. Upon arrival, he mounted a horse and rode through the district—but he chose to forgo a coat and gloves. If you’ve ever traveled to DC in early March, you can probably guess the weather conditions that day. Yep, it was cold and drizzling.

Unfortunately, Harrison caught a cold after being out in the elements. The illness progressed and developed into pneumonia. Meanwhile, his wife, Anna Harrison, was packing for her move to the White House (in her absence, the couple’s daughter-in-law, Jane Irwin Harrison, served as the interim First Lady). Sadly, Anna never got to see her husband in office—he died exactly one month to the day after his inauguration. Even though she wasn’t in Washington performing First Lady duties, Congress voted to provide Anna with a pension equivalent to her husband’s salary.

While William Harrison had the shortest presidency on record, his family line wasn’t over at the White House. The ninth president’s grandson, Benjamin Harrison, became the 23rd president of the United States.
