Join us for a roundtable discussion with Roberto Benavidez and Eric Standley, exhibiting artists in The Possibilities of Paper, as they discuss their inspirations and working processes.

Based in Los Angeles, Roberto Benavidez explores the potential of the piñata and the underlying themes of race and transgression he detects within the form, mediated by his self-described identity as a “South Texan, queer, figurative sculptor.”

Eric Standley, a professor of art at Virginia Tech, builds intricate, imagined cut-paper “artifacts” using vector-based software and CNC laser engraving machines. His technology-infused practice enables him to create elaborate works with a precision often reserved for industry, mass production, and scientific research, while maintaining a delicacy and intimacy grounded in touch and freehand drawing.
