Drop a 🖐🏽 below if gender inequality is an issue in your culture. The reality is that this crisis isn’t specific to any one culture, country or continent. There is a misconception that gender inequality is an issue that only impacts developing nations, but that’s not true. There is not a place on Earth where women are equal to men. Period. 
 
Our fund focuses on India specifically because of the significance of the issue and the size of its population. More girls negatively impacted = a chance to empower more girls. We also think it’s important to be specific when it comes to this work because each culture has its own unique DNA. For example, the obstacles that prevent a girl from attending school in India may differ from the obstacles girls face in Indonesia. And although shame is universal, how it is used as a weapon against girls and women can differ from culture to culture. In fact, these obstacles may differ from state to state or even community to community within a country. 
 
Last year during my birthday campaign – and thanks to your generous support – we made grants to 4 community based organizations (CBOs) that work on gender equality across India. The Unicorn Island Fund team is en route to India as we speak to visit these very organizations on the ground. 
 
Stay tuned to learn specifically how these CBOs are having an impact on girls and gender inequality and how we might be able to apply these learnings elsewhere. Because spoiler alert, My birthday is this month and we will be doing a repeat.
