Hayao Miyazaki‘s history of retirement is a complex one. He initially stepped away in the late 1990s, but then returned to direct the 2002 Oscar-winning “Spirited Away.” While “The Wind Rises” in 2013 was believed to be his swan song, his newest film, “The Boy and the Heron,” took on that mantle more recently. '⁠

But Studio Ghibli‘s VP, Junichi Nishioka, let it slip during the Toronto International Film Festival that Miyazaki may be far from finished. ⁠

“Other people say that this might be his last film, but he doesn’t feel that way at all,” said Nishioka through a translator, according to CBC.⁠

“The Boy and the Heron” revolves around a young boy’s enchanting encounter in an old building, where he discovers a magical heron. It’s set to debut in North American theaters on December 8, after a successful premiere in Japan.⁠
