At Children’s, our team members have the privilege of caring for patient families as they walk through challenging circumstances. For Taylor, a certified nursing assistant in our Hematology/Oncology unit, this bond is extra special, and the experiences hit close to home.

Her sophomore year of high school, Taylor’s younger sister, Grace, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), quickly turning their family’s world upside down. Through a whirlwind of appointments, inpatient stays and intense treatment, Taylor and her family still remember countless positive memories and experiences, thanks to Grace’s care team. In fact, it was the kindness, empathy and dedication of the nurses and Dr. Beck, division chief of Hematology/Oncology, that inspired Taylor’s career path.

After watching Grace fight—and beat!—cancer, Taylor finished high school and went on to pursue a nursing degree at Creighton University and complete Children’s Student-to-Nurse Sponsorship Program. Today, Grace is a happy, healthy high school student who’s been in remission since 2017; and Taylor is eager to begin the Nurse Residency program and begin as a nurse in the H/O unit. She channels her “why” in the work she does every single day, making an impact for her patients and their families.

“It’s been amazing—and surreal—to work alongside some of the nurses who cared for my sister,” Taylor says. “That was the most difficult thing my family has been through, but now I get to use it to empathize with and help my patients and their families.” 🧡
