The Artemis Moon Tree seeds are back on Earth — now what?

The Artemis I mission carried the sycamore, loblolly pine, coast redwood, sweetgum, and Douglas-fir species of tree seeds, the same species that Stuart Roosa carried aboard the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. The Apollo Moon Trees have been planted all over the country and many can still be found today.

The #Artemis I mission also carried tree seeds aboard the Orion spacecraft in late 2022. These thousands of seeds travelled about 270,000 miles (435,000 km) from Earth, more than 40,000 miles (64,000 km) beyond the far side of the Moon.

As @u.s.forestservice teams are growing Artemis Moon Tree seedlings for planting, @NASA’s Moon Trees Quest encourages the observation the Apollo Moon Trees and other trees of the same species. Check out the link in the bio for more information.

Video description: The video opens with a shot of the Orion spacecraft splashing down into the Pacific Ocean. The video cuts to a shot of Utilization Subject Matter Expert Bianca Rhym speaking to the camera. Bags containing the tree seeds are seen sitting on the surface of a table. The Artemis I Space Launch System rocket launches into space and the Orion spacecraft is seen against the blackness of space. There are a couple of shots of an engineer interacting with test tubes, filling them with water, and moving them from place to place. We see Rhym again, and then a shot of a tree. The video ends with a graphic that reads “Moon Trees Quest.”
