🌙 Here is Ron Siu’s design for the 2023 Steal This Poster Exchange! Thank you, rsronsiu ! 🌙

“My poster ‘Night Fliers’ doubles as both a poster and a set of masks that viewers can choose to cut out and wear. This idea came after looking at Asian paper crafts and "toy prints" (prints that were intended for children to cut out and play with) from the 19th century.

The imagery itself was inspired by gay-themed romance mangas which often feature characters in the throes of new adventures and awakening desires. I wanted viewers to be able to carry a sense of that fantasy, mystery and mischief with them wherever they go. And in doing so, explore how our personal fantasies can almost be a familiar 'place' one always takes with them.” – Ron Siu

Ron Siu is an artist currently based in Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada. He graduated with his BFA in Drawing & Painting at OCAD University in 2019. Working expansively in painting and print media approaches, Siu’s practice explores themes around Queer desire and fantasy. His work has been shown in exhibitions across Canada and internationally in the UK and Germany. Siu has also participated in multiple residencies, including at Centre[3] in Hamilton and Atelier Circulaire in Montreal.

Ron Siu’s practice incorporates painting, printmaking, and animation elements to explore contemporary themes around Queer desire and fantasy. His work is informed by Western and Asian art historical canons, decorative art movements, and mythology influences; alongside more contemporary pop sources such as gay-themed Japanese graphic romance novels, video games, and supernatural horror. By connecting seemingly disparate cross-cultural threads, Siu aims to express a contemporary sense of Queer imagination.
