This recruiting tactic almost worked on me when I was a college football recruit.

It’s the first offer strategy.

Now I ended up playing at Penn State, but when I was in high school, a coach gave me my first offer early.

Being the first school to offer somebody is it can be risky.

Other schools haven’t put their cards on the table yet. It’s easy to offer a recruit when other schools have already offered him.

But, by being the first school to offer somebody, you’re giving that kid and his family certified proof you believed in them before anyone else.

That matters when you’re building a relationship.

For me, it definitely meant a lot.

I drove to a camp at a Power 5 school, and they offered me before the end of the weekend.

I was running around telling everybody I was going to commit there.

I hit the team store for one of everything.

Then my dad gave me some great advice. He said, “Take a step back. Let the process play out.”

A few weeks later, Notre Dame offered.

Offers came pouring in after that.

But my first offer, THAT was Boston College.
