Photos by amivitale | Tomorrow is #WorldRhinoDay, and I hope these stories I share can be cautionary tales of human impact and invitations to take action. At a moment when it seems like there is no hope, a dedicated group of individuals are banding together doing everything they can to save this species. It is often in the face of our greatest challenges that human ingenuity and creativity light a path forward. 

In a landmark moment, BioRescue Project, the team behind the effort to save northern white rhinos from extinction, has just announced that it will be partnering with Colossal Biosciences, the world’s first de-extinction company working to bring back species like the woolly mammoth, the dodo, and the thylacine. Through its cutting-edge genetic technology, Colossal hopes to piece together the missing links of the northern white rhinos’ genetic history by leveraging genome sequencing and gene editing methods from museum samples of the species from the past.
