“I spoke to a counselor, and she said, ‘You know what’—and this is what literally was mind-changing for me—’It's okay to have those thoughts of self-harm. It's okay to have those … suicidal thoughts. That's a symptom of depression, and depression is treatable, Eltina.’ And for me it was just like a night and day difference, for (me) to realize that these thoughts are normal, it's okay to have these thoughts, and that (I) have depression. Let's work on that depression. And so that's when I got myself back into counseling.”
