The Seattle Sounders have finally unveiled their new crest as part of their evolved visual identity ahead of the organization’s 50th anniversary in 2024. With the club having one of the most iconic and beloved crests in the league, this new look has a high bar to clear. Still, these changes come after a long development process with supporters, community members, and other stakeholders to land on an updated visual identity that seeks to embrace the Sounders’ rich history and look towards the future of this storied team. Although the new crest does err on the side of simplicity, it’s also cleverly maintained portions of the old badge that many of us loved, like the Space Needle and the unique outline amongst MLS crests. Aside from the new emblem, the tertiary marks are probably the most exciting part about this evolution. Inspired by the club’s APSL and A-League-era logos, the orca makes a triumphant return to the Sounders after a decades-long absence — something sure to please many longtime supporters. One other special tertiary mark will be the Carnation, embracing a Sounders tradition dating back to 1974 when players first handed out flowers to fans as a recognition for their support — a tradition that is still upheld today at the end of every season. There’s a whole lot more to unpack from this latest brand identity change in MLS, but the thoughtful details and genuine attempt to celebrate the club’s long history is something to be valued.
