Here are 3 things you might not know about the upcoming Harvest Moon:

1. It's called the "Harvest Moon" because it appears as a full moon—rising at about the same time after sunset—for multiple nights in a row, giving farmers a few extra evenings of light to help them finish harvesting their crops before the fall frost arrives.

2. This year, those nights span Sept. 28-30, with the moon reaching its peak at 5:58 a.m. EST on Friday, Sept. 29. (Btw—it doesn't always happen in September. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox and will occasionally appear in October.)

3. The 2023 Harvest Moon is extra special because it's also a supermoon (a moon that looks larger than usual because of where it is in its orbit). It'll be the last supermoon of 2023, so get out there and take a gander this week!
