Day 14 – The Waiting

It’s where we spend so much time in our lives. Both the kind in a store or at a concert, and the kind heavily laden on our hearts and in our minds. The kind anxiety feeds from and excitement exclaims. 

It might feel like a nauseous tummy before a presentation or the bubbling over with excitement right before your most loved band takes the stage. It might be the toe tapping impatience in the check-out line with the person in front of you digging for their wallet, or the finger tapping taking place on your desk as you await the clicking of the ‘end call’ button on a zoom call. 

Sometimes the waiting sits with longing and wishing. Awaiting the better thing, the higher paying job, “the one” who is ready to commit. 

No matter the kind, the waiting always finds us. Whether we are prepared or not. Whether we are patient, or not. And then what? 

I’m learning a lot about myself in the waiting. It’s not the first time I’ve been here. But this one hits a little different. 

And…it is also prepared to teach me more.

It triggers tears and fears. It tests my patience and pokes my anxiety. It leads me to stillness and the appreciation of the quiet. It takes me on walks and sets beauty in front of me. It is the host of conversations and virtual hugs I didn’t expect.

The waiting is that thing I learn to make peace with. But not so easily. In all the uncertainty, the waiting is the certainty. We know it will be there. Next to us. In front of us. Behind us. 

I’m not sure I’ll ever master it, but I’m learning to slow my pace, enjoy the view, and ponder the space I stand, in the in between. It is an adventure after all. Not always a fun one, but always an educational one. And if there’s anything I can take away from the waiting, it is the knowing that sometimes it is in the waiting that the most magic, the most growth, the most stretching, acknowledging, and accepting, happens.

And that, is a gift.
