Five years ago, N wrote this. My little guy was 11. And fighting for happiness every day. Some days he found it. Some days he didn’t. Most days were a mixture of highs and lows.

He has always been extraordinary. Different from the expected ‘norm’ for his age. An old soul. Sometimes playing LEGOs or video games. While others reading physics books beyond his years and telling me about the times he saw and spoke with God.
.
Not long after this, he was hospitalized for self harm and depression. For the second time in his short life. He spent nearly eight weeks in intense therapy. And in that environment, with other kids doing the same, he said he finally less alone. Because he saw himself in others. And until that point, he hadn’t.

He has taught me so much. And continues to do so. I’m not sure I’ve met a stronger soul.
.
This kid, he’s always been wise beyond his years. With a heart that vastly loves many, and judges few. And he’s always stood on his own, even if feeling alone, and proudly grounded in his feet in his belief and knowledge of who he is. Whether it was with his green Mohawk, camouflage painted nails, or his lack of enthusiasm for playing sports - even though nearly every adult would ask him upon meeting, “what sports do you play?”

He always has been one writing a new story and paving a new path, one according to who HE is. Not who everyone else believes he should be.

This boy. He. Is. Beautiful.
And he reminds all of us - we are too.
