Have you seen this multicolored insect flying around your neighborhood? The spotted lanternfly isn’t native to Virginia, but that hasn’t stopped the bug from spreading across the commonwealth.

According to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the spotted lanternfly has a heavy infestation in Clarke, Frederick, and Warren counties, as well as the city of Winchester. Now, nearby Leesburg, the seat of Loudoun County, has a way to report the invasive species.

The local Department of Public Works recently launched an invasive species locator map. The interactive feature allows residents to note the address nearest to where they saw the species, the type of species, and the date of observation. Reporters also have the option to upload a picture and add notes to the submission.

In addition to collecting information on spotted lanternfly sightings, officials are also asking residents to report Tree of Heaven locations. Spotted lanternflies are attracted to the tree, which Virginia Invasive Species notes resembles native sumac and walnut species.

If you’re in the Leesburg area, you can find the interactive map at our link in bio.
