🗓️ Remembering October 3rd: A Day of Tragedy and Heroism and to take a moment to Honor our friend and fellow distiller Rob Dietrich who fought in Mogadishu. Rob is not only a great friend and Master Distiller for Blackened but also a 10th Mountain Vet.

Today, we take a moment to reflect on the events that unfolded on October 3rd, a day forever etched in history. On this day in 1993, the world witnessed the tragic events known as the Battle of Mogadishu, which later inspired the book and movie “Black Hawk Down.”

The Battle of Mogadishu was part of a larger military operation called Operation Gothic Serpent, carried out by U.S. forces in Somalia. The mission aimed to capture key lieutenants of the warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, who had been responsible for causing immense suffering and instability in the region.

However, what was intended to be a swift and precise operation turned into a prolonged and intense firefight. On October 3rd, a U.S. Army Ranger and Delta Force team embarked on a mission to capture two of Aidid’s top lieutenants in the heart of Mogadishu. The operation involved the use of helicopters, specifically the UH-60 Black Hawk. This mission was supported by the 10th Mountain. 

As the American forces descended upon the target area, they were met with fierce resistance from heavily armed Somali militia fighters. What was initially expected to be a short operation quickly spiraled into a desperate battle for survival. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by rocket-propelled grenades, leading to a chain of events that would forever change the lives of those involved.
