🖼 About the Art 🖼

All of the art in the new Sudwerk restaurant (as well as our beer labels) was created by Gregory Shilling (@paintinmyblood)! Here's what he had to say about the art.

"Decorating a restaurant was a new challenge but I was honored to create the wall art for Sudwerk’s new space. I made 5 large scale paintings in the months leading up to our big opening, and I hope y'all dig them.

The largest is the Regrowth bear design which we’ve featured on the Regrowth IPA, a semi truck, and our rooftop mural. It probably goes without saying why this California icon, emerging from a tangle of hops and barley, represents our brand. And now that the restaurant is back from its long hibernation, 'Regrowth' seems to fit even better. 

By the entrance, you’ll find a detailed rendering of the Backyard Hero label. I wanted to capture the radiant energy of the Central Valley sunset and the mellow bliss of a suburban backyard evening. 

Finally, I created a triptych to go above the kitchen. Here you’ll find three oil paintings of a Great Blue Heron flanked by a pair of Swainson’s Hawks and a group of Burrowing Owls. All these species are native to the Davis area. 

The Swainson’s hawks are a local favorite, and their yearly migration into town coincides perfectly with the opening of the restaurant; a good omen I think. I’d encourage anyone who doesn’t know about the Davis burrowing owls to research their history and consider ways we can help protect them before they’re gone.
