In this week’s installment of Masked and Answered, Macy Su, an HOD major from Frisco, Texas, reflects on the experience of embarking on her first year of college in the midst of a global pandemic:

“I came into college last semester after graduating high school and having missed out on some of those important events like prom and graduation. So I think that when our class got here, we were so eager to meet each other and make connections, because we lived through the remainder of our senior year not having that. And I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen from this community and this school and the people here, especially given the times that we’re in. And especially for those of us far from home, it was important to find those communities that feel like home, where you feel comfortable and safe. My house, Stambaugh, and Dr. Noble, have done an awesome job of keeping our options open and always having something safe for us to participate in. We our do our weekly Stambaugh signature events, we do trivia nights and paint nights. And my friends and I have recreated things we would do in person, like having a virtual movie night through Netflix watch parties. This version of Vanderbilt is all that we’ve ever known, and I can’t imagine it any different, but I’m looking forward to a time when we can go to in person events and do things like sit together in a group at a football game. I’m excited to see how our experience this first year is going to shape the next four. When we graduate, we’re going to look back on this time and think, ‘We overcame that? We can do anything.’” - Macy Su, #VU2024
