Q: What is your favorite part about VU?⁣
A: My favorite thing about Vanderbilt is working with optimistic, passionate people who believe in the power of education to improve lives and transform communities. In the Dean of Students division, there are a wide variety of roles and strong camaraderie. At our best, we are trying to build and shape and support future changemakers.⁣

Q: 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. What does the 19th amendment mean to you?⁣
A:The 19th Amendment holds historical legal significance but it was long overdue! Of course, women—ALL women—should have been included from the very beginning. It is important to remember, though, that while the Amendment on its face applies to all women, racism in this country operated to ensure that African American women, in particular, faced a range of obstacles, including violence, in fully exercising this right.⁣
⁣
Q: Why is it important to celebrate Women’s History Month?⁣
A: When history focuses on male leadership and military milestones, as if it were inevitable instead of structural, women’s participation and contributions have been minimized or erased. Women explorers, warriors, scientists, artists, writers, poets, playwrights, painters, architects, doctors, coders, gamers, you name it, have always existed. We still have a lot of uncovering, championing, and educating to do, to fill these gaps. Their absence is a reflection of priorities – not historical reality. Women have always made history.⁣

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say to our social media audience about Women’s History Month and the importance of the 19th amendment?⁣
A: Women have a rich, important, thrilling history worth your time. Learning women’s history and sharing it with your friends and family, partners, nieces, sisters, daughters, chosen family, is crucial. I find Women’s History Month motivating and inspiring, but, of course, I recommend championing women all year long.⁣
