Q: What is your favorite part about VU?
A: I enjoy the students and their diverse backgrounds. I have met more diverse students in my 4 years here than I have in my entire life.

Q: What do you think individuals can do to develop a sense of inclusion and belonging in the VU community?
A: I have this model I came up with called the three Hs of community change. There’s “heart work,” “hand work,” and “head work.” Heart work speaks to how you can care differently, hand work speaks to what are you doing differently, and the head work speaks to how are you thinking differently. Collectively I think people have to make a concerted effort to do the work in those areas. Additionally, people have to go and do the research. It’s not the responsibility of a person of color or any other marginalized identity to always inform. I always tell my students – I can help you with your head work in terms of how you think differently. But the heart and the hand, that’s all on you.

Q: How has the National Pan-Hellenic Council House impacted students’ experiences on campus?
A: It has re-strengthened and affirmed the unity and the communal bond between the organizations that comprise the NPHC. It has been great – it has allowed them a sense of autonomy in terms of how they want to do their programs and it allows them to be more creative. It has also allowed them to get a few steps closer toward feeling valued, appreciated, and seen on this campus. Because while the house is great, there are still other aspects of their campus experience where they may feel invisible or marginalized. So even though it is just a residential building, it is also a milestone of heritage and of presence for the council.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say to our social media audience about #BlackHistoryMonth?
A: Find a Black American and tell them you appreciate them. Because a lot of times, Black Americans within our country are overlooked for the work that they do and the things they contribute.
